Vintage Report

2020 was a very good vintage for red Burgundy, characterized by early flowering and a warm, dry summer. This resulted in concentrated wines with ripe tannins and excellent aging potential, although yields were lower.

Louis Latour Château Corton Grancey Grand Cru 2020 Côte de Beaune, Burgundy

Louis Latour Château Corton Grancey Grand Cru 2020 is Maison Louis Latour's flagship red Burgundy, made from Pinot Noir from 5 Grand Cru plots on the Corton hill. The name Grancey refers to the last owners of the château on the road to Corton, before the Latour family bought the estate in 1891. This wine is only made when the grapes are perfectly ripe, and after separate aging, only the best barrels are blended. As a result, Château Corton Grancey represents the most selective and prestigious red Corton style from Louis Latour.

Vineyards and region

Château Corton Grancey comes from Corton Grand Cru, in Aloxe-Corton in the north of the Côte de Beaune.

Location / Origin: The wine is a blend of 5 plots from Domaine Latour Corton Grand Cru: Bressandes, Perrières, Grèves, Clos du Roi, and Chaumes. The proportion of these plots varies by vintage, ensuring that only the strongest balance makes it into the final wine.

Soil: The vines grow on marl and limestone. These soils give Pinot Noir structure, depth, and a mineral undertone, fitting the power of Corton Grand Cru.

Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 40 years old, and the yield is around 35 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing for careful selection of the fruit.

Appellation: Corton Grand Cru is one of the great red Grand Cru appellations of the Côte de Beaune. The wines are known for power, aging potential, and a firm yet refined structure.

Grape composition

This Grand Cru is made entirely from Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir – Corton Grand Cru: Pinot Noir gives Château Corton Grancey its deep ruby red color, black cherry, blueberry, spice, and refined tannins. On the Corton hill, the grape gains more power, depth, and aging potential than in many lighter village appellations of Burgundy.

Vinification and aging

The vinification follows a classic Burgundian approach, with separate aging per plot and a strict final selection.

Fermentation: The wine is traditionally fermented in open vats. This method helps extract color, aroma, and structure from the Pinot Noir skins while preserving the grape's finesse.

Aging / Oak Maturation: The wine ages for 10–12 months in oak barrels, 35% of which are new wood. Louis Latour uses French oak barrels from its own cooperage with medium toast, which gives the wine extra depth, spice, and roundness.

Selection: The 5 Grand Cru components are first aged separately. Then, only the best barrels are blended for Château Corton Grancey, giving the wine its complexity and exclusive position within Louis Latour.

Aging Potential: This Grand Cru has an aging potential of 10–15 years. Its structure, tannins, and concentration provide the wine with enough foundation to develop slowly.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, Château Corton Grancey 2020 has a deep ruby red color with a slight garnet hue. The aroma is complex, with black cherry, blueberry, and mocha. The palate is round and layered, with soft tannins, subtle pepperiness, and a long, powerful finish.

Serving Temperature: Serve this Corton Grand Cru at 16–17 °C, allowing the black cherry, mocha, spice, and soft tannins to fully express themselves.

Dishes: Excellent with wild boar, roasted beef, roasted quail, duck à l’orange, and mature cheeses.

Awards

98/100, James Suckling (2020): Praised for its combination of wild and refined Grand Cru power, with spicy depth, fine tannins, and an energetic finish.

90–92/100, Burghound.com (2020): Appreciates the earthy, slightly sauvage aromas, dark cherry, floral nuance, good energy, and firm length.

94/100, Tim Atkin (2020): Highlights blackcurrant, plum, underbrush, mineral power, beautifully textured tannins, and a soft fruit core.

18/20, Perswijn (2020): Compact and powerful, with ripe cherries, blackberries, leather, forest floor, bacon-like depth, and great length.

93/100, Wine Enthusiast (2020): Praises the combination of umami, mushroom, black cherry, stony tension, juicy tannins, and vibrant acidity.

92/100, The Wine Advocate (2020): Describes a full-bodied, layered style with raspberry, cherry, sweet spices, peony, dark chocolate, and powdery tannins.

94/100, Wine Spectator Insider (2020): Emphasizes the velvety texture, black cherry, blackberry, plum, earth, spices, and strong aging potential.

4.3 stars, Vivino: A very strong user score for this prestigious Corton Grand Cru from Louis Latour.

More information about Château Corton Grancey

Château Corton Grancey holds a special place within Maison Louis Latour. The wine is not from a single plot, but a selection from 5 Grand Cru plots on the Corton hill. This approach makes this cuvée unique within the house: each part is aged separately, and only after aging is it determined which barrels are good enough for the final blend. If a vintage does not meet the desired standard, Château Corton Grancey is not released as a separate cuvée.
