Louis Latour Volnay 2018 Côte de Beaune, Burgundy
Louis Latour Volnay 2018 is a red Burgundy made from Pinot Noir from the village of Volnay, high above the Burgundian plain and close to Pommard. This wine showcases the elegant side of the Côte de Beaune, with wild strawberry, cherry, spiciness, and the refined earthy notes that make Volnay so beloved. The combination of 30-year-old vines, calcareous clay soil, manual harvesting, and 10–12 months of aging in French oak gives this 2018 extra depth and a beautifully developed Burgundian style.
Vineyards and Region
Volnay is located in the Côte de Beaune and is known for Pinot Noir with elegance, fragrance, and refined structure.
• Location / Origin: Volnay is situated on a small hill above the Burgundian plain, a short distance from Pommard. From the village square by the 14th-century church, on a clear day, you can see across the plain and even towards the snowy Mont Blanc.
• Appellation: This wine comes from the Volnay appellation, within the Côte de Beaune. Volnay is particularly valued for red Burgundy with finesse, aromatic expression, and a soft but distinct structure.
• Soil: The vines grow on Bathonian limestone and clay. This combination gives Pinot Noir both freshness and tension, as well as sufficient grip in its structure.
• Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, and the yield is around 40 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, which is important for the careful processing of Pinot Noir.
Grape Composition
This Volnay is made entirely from Pinot Noir.
• Pinot Noir – Volnay: Pinot Noir gives this wine its ruby red color, refined aromas of strawberry and cherry, soft tannins, and earthy Burgundian depth. In Volnay, the grape often develops an elegant, fragrant style with subtle spiciness and a fine structure.
Vinification and Aging
The vinification follows Maison Louis Latour's classic Burgundian approach.
• Fermentation: The wine undergoes traditional fermentation in open vats. This method helps extract color, aroma, and structure from the Pinot Noir skins without losing the grape's refinement.
• Aging / Oak Maturation: The wine ages for 10–12 months in French oak barrels from Louis Latour's own cooperage, 15% of which are new wood. The medium toast imparts subtle notes of mocha and spice, while the fruit and elegance of Volnay remain central.
• Aging Potential: This Volnay has an aging potential of 5–7 years. This allows the 2018, in addition to its fruity core, to develop more earthy notes, spiciness, and depth.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
In the glass, this Volnay has a dark ruby red color, with an expressive aroma of wild strawberry, cherry, and mocha. The taste is ample and elegant, with black fruit, light spiciness, forest floor, and a beautiful aromatic length. The finish remains refined, supple, and Burgundian.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Volnay at 14–15 °C, so that the wild strawberry, cherry, soft tannins, and earthy notes remain beautifully balanced.
• Dishes: Excellent with suckling pig, veal shank, roasted poultry, mushrooms, and aged cheeses.
Awards
• 16/20, Perswijn (2018): Praised for its developed style with sweet cherry, forest floor, fine tobacco, soft fruit, sufficient acidity, grip, and length.
• Excellent, Bill Nanson (2018): Described as a Volnay with deep fruit expression, lots of volume, excellent freshness, and an extra dimension on the finish.
• 4.0 stars, Vivino: A strong user rating for this elegant Pinot Noir from Volnay, with the refined style for which red Burgundy is known.
