Sangiovese

Buy or order Sangiovese wine

Sangiovese is indispensable in Italy, especially in the Tuscan wine region. There, the grape has earned its recognition in various wines, such as the well-known Chianti, as well as Brunello di Montalcino and Montepulciano. These are all wines made from the promising Sangiovese grape. This grape is also planted in small vineyards in countries like Argentina and the United States. However, there, the Sangiovese grape isn't as widespread as in Italy, as the vines must be at least 50 years old for a top-quality wine. The old vines with deep roots produce full, small clusters known for their spicy notes.

According to the books, the Sangiovese grape is one of the oldest grape varieties, having been cultivated in the area between Siena and Florence since the 13th century. This centuries-old tradition translated into top quality after the 1970s, when the wines gained more depth and the Sangiovese grape was able to fully develop. Today, exquisite wines are made from the Sangiovese grape, including top wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Brancaia Il Blu, and Gabbiano Bellezza.

The maturing of a Sangiovese wine in wooden barrels

The Sangiovese grape is ideally suited for long aging in oak barrels. This extended aging process develops a fuller and more powerful palate, and the tannins are reduced. Great wines do age in oak for more than one or two years, which is significant. However, if Sangiovese grapes receive more sunshine and the harvest is brought in later, a soft and youthful Sangiovese wine can also be made. This is because the grapes simply contain more sugar and ultimately soften in flavor. Sangiovese is also often blended with Primitivo, Merlot, and Montepulciano, among others. This allows a winemaker to create the ultimate blend and produce beautiful wines priced around 7 euros.

What does a Sangiovese taste like?

What does a Sangiovese wine taste like? They're actually quite diverse, but the young and easy-drinking wines often have notes of cherry, strawberry, fig, and some red flowers. The more powerful wines have a broader palette with nuances of leather, chocolate, cedar, and tobacco. As a Sangiovese wine ages, its taste impressions change, for example, towards black fruit, light spices, and rich flavors like earth and plum. A well-known Sangiovese wine is Chianti, known for its spicy nose and flavor; experience it for yourself.

How long can I keep a Sangiovese wine?

Can you age a Sangiovese wine? Absolutely! A Brunello di Montalcino can be aged for up to 30 years in a good vintage. Of course, this doesn't apply to all Sangiovese wines, as a Chianti is best enjoyed for a maximum of eight years after the vintage. Simpler Sangiovese wines can be enjoyed for a maximum of four years after the vintage. Everything depends on the quality and storage conditions. So always consult an expert for the exact age of a Sangiovese wine.
