Viura

Buy or order Viura wine

Viura isn't the most well-known grape, but today it has developed into a vibrant and ripe variety. Viura is primarily grown in Spain and is often blended with Macabeo. In other countries, this Viura grape goes by a different name, Macabeu, as in France, for example. The grape's beautiful characteristics produce a fresh and young wine with an emphasis on citrus fruit. Therefore, all Viura wines should be enjoyed young. The Viura grape is particularly well-established in the Rioja region and other northern Spanish wine regions.

In some wine regions, Viura is also called Macabeo, the same vines just with a different name. This grape only truly became known in the late nineteenth century after the phylloxera outbreak. As a result, it was widely planted in Rioja, where today's best Viura wines are produced. Sparkling wines are also made from this grape, well-known for their Cava.

What does a Viura wine taste like?

The Viura grape naturally boasts a beautiful bouquet of fresh aromas and flavors. This is partly due to the cool climate where it thrives. Vines are often found in cool regions. All Viura wines are also highly fragrant, with rich notes of green apple, gooseberry, lime, and some green herbs. The palate is refreshing and easy to drink. Beautiful, soft flavors of white and citrus peel, green herbs, and a touch of grapefruit. The finish is always refreshing and thirst-quenching with a rich bouquet.

What do we eat at a Viura?

A light wine calls for a light dish, because that's delicious. This white Viura is perfect as an accompaniment to a salad, a piece of white fish, and as an aperitif. Its refreshing flavors make this white wine delicious in the spring or summer sun. A Viura wine is simply a wine everyone enjoys, making it a perfect choice for a birthday or party.

How long can I keep a Viura wine?

It's not really a wine for aging. The Viura grape reveals its beautiful characteristics and flavors in the first three years after harvest. However, there are exceptions, as the Viura grape is also suitable for oak aging. Using oak barrels alters the grape's characteristics. We should think of a fuller, more powerful wine with abundant nuances of yellow fruit, roasted nuts, and a touch of Bourbon. These wines are considerably more expensive to purchase, but they also offer full flavors. Examples include Placet by Alvaro Palacios and Valenciso Barrica. These wines can be enjoyed for up to five or six years after harvest.
