Vintage Report

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon harvest from the North Coast received a rating of 88-90 points. However, the quality in this vintage is inconsistent, even among the best wines.

Our Review

I've had it multiple times, you really can't go wrong with it. It's one of the best-selling 'Cabs' in the US for a reason. It could have more depth, but then it would be much more expensive, but it really is a good example of an American Cabernet Sauvignon.

Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is Joel Gott's classic California">California Cabernet, crafted from grapes sourced from several top regions across the state. A fourth-generation California winemaker, Joel Gott founded his estate in 1996 with the goal of crafting fruit-driven, balanced wines that clearly reveal their provenance. What kind of wine is Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022? It's a modern, accessible Cabernet that combines Californian power with ripe red and dark fruit, a soft structure, and just the right amount of spice and oak to keep things interesting.

Vineyards and region

The grapes for Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 come from the United States, California, across various appellations that together define the wine's character. Napa Valley provides complexity and depth, Sonoma County adds freshness, and Lake County provides firm tannins and a mineral note. Mendocino contributes dark fruit and color, Lodi contributes rich flavors and a soft texture, while Central Coast fruit adds freshness, spice, and acidity to the blend. By carefully combining these different origins, the result is a Cabernet that is distinctly Californian, yet not dominated by any single region.

Vinification and maturation

After harvest, the grapes are sorted, destemmed, and vinified separately by vineyard, allowing for the precise expression of each origin's style. Fermentation takes place in separate vats, where temperature and skin contact are controlled to optimally extract color, fruit, and structure without harsh tannins. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, containing approximately 30% new American oak, which imparts subtle notes of vanilla, toast, and spice alongside the fruit. During aging, the individual lots are tasted regularly and only then are they finally blended, ensuring the perfect balance between the different regions and the typical Joel Gott signature. The alcohol content is around 13.9%, which, combined with sufficient acidity, results in a smooth yet not heavy style.

Grape composition

Cabernet Sauvignon – California
Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from various Californian appellations. The grape offers ripe aromas of red and black fruit, distinct yet supple tannins, and sufficient backbone to support the oak and rich fruit influences, while simultaneously maintaining sufficient freshness to keep the wine vibrant.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, Joel Gott 815 Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 displays a deep ruby red color. The aroma reveals raspberries, blackberries, and plums, complemented by notes of mocha, cinnamon, and cedar. On the palate, the wine opens with juicy red fruit, followed by a soft, almost velvety texture in the middle. The finish combines black pepper, ripe dark fruit, and subtle oak notes in a long, slightly spicy finish. Ideally, serve this Cabernet between 16 and 18°C (60 and 64°F) and, if enjoyed young, allow it to air out in a carafe for half an hour. At the table, it pairs perfectly with grilled beef, barbecued burgers, beef or lamb stews, savory pizzas, or a stuffed lasagna with a rich tomato sauce and aged cheese.
