The Rich History of Alvi's Drift Winery

Deeply rooted in South African winemaking tradition, Alvi's Drift bears the name of Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, the visionary founder of this Worcester winery. In 1928, Albertus Viljoen, better known as Alvi, built a drift (bridge) over the Breede River. This bridge, intended to provide easier access to the family's extensive estates, quickly became known as 'Alvi's Drift'. Today, the name honors the grandfather of the current Van der Merwe generation and is synonymous with the exquisite wines they produce. With an impressive 420 hectares of vineyards, growing no fewer than nineteen unique grape varieties, Alvi's Drift is South Africa's largest family-owned winery. The carefully selected grapes, sourced exclusively from their own land, are grown primarily on the rolling banks of the Breede River. Here, where the vines produce low yields and the soil is enriched with natural compost from the farm, the magic of Alvi's Drift Viognier is born.
