The 2023 vintage in South Africa is characterized by excellent quality with a score of 90 on the Robert Parker scale. The growing season benefited from an ideal balance of warmth and coolness, resulting in a top harvest.

This False Bay Crystalline Chardonnay possesses unparalleled beauty: ripe, full-bodied, and highly aromatic! This wine is the work of winemaker Paul Boutinot, who took over the Waterkloof winery in 2004 after a 10-year search. He had one goal: to produce exceptionally pure wines in which you can taste the classic aromas and flavors of each grape variety. He was a big fan of well-known names like Chablis, Paulliac, and Barolo, and it was precisely this that inspired him. He found his happiness on the Schapenberg in Somerset West, Stellenbosch. He chose the southern slopes of the mountain overlooking False Bay in the Cape. At an altitude of three hundred meters, the grapes thrive in the perfect environment. Plenty of sunshine and the cool breeze that constantly blows through the Chardonnay vineyards. Surrounded by the Hottentots-Holland and Helderberg mountains, the grapes enjoy a harmonious interplay between nature and man.

Crystal clear Chardonnay from False Bay

Anyone who knows Paul well knows he makes wines with the utmost respect for nature. After all, he says, it's our best friend, and that's paid off, as he's achieved Biodiversity Champion status. The Chardonnay grapes are also grown biodynamically, resulting in a wine with exceptional clarity. Hence the name Crystalline. The grapes thrive in the rich soil structure, rich in limestone and mountain pebbles. The perfect climate, with both warmth and coolness, is perfect, resulting in a superb harvest.

Full and very powerful, this False Bay Chardonnay

Upon pouring, we're immediately struck by its beautiful light golden color. It fills the glass, and we pick it up and sniff the rim. The aromas are overwhelming, a richness of tropical fruit interspersed with notes of peach and lime. This rich aroma continues into the taste of this False Bay Crystalline Chardonnay. On the palate, it offers a very pleasant mouthfeel with thick textures, abundant tropical fruit, and a light tingle of lime. The finish is remarkably soft and ripe.
