Vintage Report

South Africa 2023 received an excellent score of 90 points according to international standards. The wines from this vintage are described as youthful and need time to reach their full potential.
The unique climate of the Elgin Valley allows Paul Cluver to create exceptional wines with a pleasant acidity balance. These are wines with a European style, which is unusual for South African wines. The Seven Flags Chardonnay comes from 27-year-old vines, making it one of the oldest in South Africa. This Chardonnay has a balanced flavor with fruity notes.

Paul Cluver wines with finesse and freshness

Originally founded as an apple farm, Paul Cluver decided in 1986 to focus on winegrowing. Thanks to its location in the cool Elgin region, close to the sea, they produce wines of remarkable finesse and freshness. The vines are planted at an average altitude of 300 and 400 meters above sea level, with the highest vineyards reaching 500 meters. At Paul Cluver, they focus on producing wines that reflect their terroir. This results in wines with abundant fruit and strong character. Today, the fourth generation is at the helm and is eager to continue this mission. The grapes for the Seven Flags Chardonnay are selected from the oldest Chardonnay vineyards on Paul Cluver's estate. The vines are located in the Elgin Valley and were planted in 1987 when the family business first began producing wine. The grapes are pressed whole bunches, after which the juice is transferred to barrels for fermentation. French oak barrels are used for this process. The wine spends a total of nine months on the lees. Malolactic fermentation is deliberately avoided to preserve the wine's natural acidity and freshness.

What does the Paul Cluver Seven Flags Chardonnay taste like?

The wine has a pale yellow color with a green hue. The aroma reveals fresh citrus fruits complemented by a hint of oak. On the palate, it offers a pure flavor with great complexity, concentration, and texture. Complex yet elegant, it has a lingering finish. This wine pairs perfectly with fish, poultry, or pork dishes.
