The winery is named after a South African winemaker nicknamed Soopje, who was very popular in the early 19th century. His congeniality and humor were universally appreciated. He owned beautiful vineyards east of Cape Town, in the Western Cape region. The vineyards were situated on a small hill, giving rise to the name Soopjeshoogte. They still produce popular wines at a reasonable price. This immediately established the winery's success: producing good quality wines at a fair price.
