The 2021 vintage in South Africa is an excellent year, scoring 94 points according to the Robert Parker Vintage Chart. The wines are currently still youthful and exhibit noticeable tannins, indicating excellent aging potential.

Thelema is undoubtedly one of the finest wineries in South Africa. And they prove it again with this Merlot that seduces your senses.

The Rich Wines of Thelema

Gyles Webb purchased Thelema, a charming, dilapidated fruit farm, in 1983 with the help of his wife. Orchards were cleared and vines planted. The manor house was restored, and the first wines under the Thelema label were released in 1988. The ripe, pure fruit wines were a revelation to many, and it wasn't long before the romantic story of a dilapidated old fruit farm became a success. By the mid-1990s, Thelema wines were selling out within a month of release, making it one of the most sought-after wine estates in South Africa. Situated at the summit of the Helshoogte Pass, with elevations ranging from 370 to 640 meters above sea level and predominantly south-facing slopes, it is also one of the highest and coolest estates in the area. The high altitude and deep red soils are ideal for producing high-quality grapes. The terroir, combined with Gyles Webb's winemaking style, results in flavorful, flamboyant, complex, and long-lasting wines with a distinctive South African character. In 2000, Gyles stepped into the role of cellar master and handed over winery duties to the talented Rudi Schultz (one of Schultz's renowned winemakers).

Twenty months of maturation for this Thelema Merlot

The red wines are vinified traditionally, just like this Thelema Merlot. After fermentation, this Thelema Merlot is aged for twenty months in French oak barrels, ten percent of which are renewed annually. This South African Merlot is wonderfully balanced and juicy, offering fine fruit aromas and toasted nuances. The tannins are very well integrated and enrich the wine in just the right amount. The finish, with subliminal notes of dark chocolate, is the highlight of this fine tasting experience from Stellenbosch. The aroma reveals ripe blackberries, smoked meat, slightly mineral, and spicy notes. The palate is generous and supple, with a soft finish and firm tannins, and a warm, long finish with beautiful balance.
