Our Review

Delicious, beautifully fruity juice, saline, creamy. Also has a place in my cooler at home.
Roel Timmermans Roel
This red wine is made from different plots: one in the lower Bievaux region, one on the Clos Genet, and one on the Sous la Roche vines. These three plots, with their different climatic conditions, do not share the same terroir, but they do have similar characteristics. First, the southeast exposure, and then a clayey-limestone soil, predominantly clay, which remains relatively thin compared to some Premiers Crus. By blending the wine from these different plots, a wine rich in fruity aromas is created, balanced by the woody character of the vinification.

13th generation Girardin at the helm

The Girardin family, one of Burgundy's oldest families, has lived in the area since the mid-1500s. The family estate was divided in the 1960s, and the 13th generation, Justin Girardin, took over part of his father's family name in 2012. Justin allows the vineyard to run as it pleases, intervening only when necessary. Although not certified organic, they do employ some biodynamic practices that align with those used by Justin's grandparents and ancestors. The grapes are harvested entirely by hand and taken directly to the winery. Here, the grapes are completely destemmed and undergo a five-day cold maceration in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. This allows the fruit flavors to fully develop. Fermentation then begins, which takes approximately 20 days. Natural yeasts are used during fermentation. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels, 15 percent of which are new.

A fruity Pinot Noir with spicy notes

The result is stunning. The Rouge Vieilles Vignes radiates its ruby red color in the glass. The aromas are immediately released. Cherries, blackcurrants, rhubarb, cloves, and orange flow from the glass. It is a fruity wine with spicy notes of cloves and pepper. It has a subtle tannic structure and considerable length.
