Louis Latour Chassagne Montrachet Rouge 2022 Chassagne Montrachet, France
Louis Latour Chassagne Montrachet Rouge 2022 showcases the red side of a village primarily famous worldwide for its great white Burgundy. This Village wine from the Côte de Beaune undergoes 10–12 months of aging in oak barrels from Louis Latour's own cooperage, 35% of which are new. This results in a classic red Burgundy with ripe red fruit, spicy depth, fresh length, and a refined oak influence.
Vineyards and region
Chassagne Montrachet is located in the Côte de Beaune, in the southern part of the Côte d’Or.
Location / Origin: Chassagne Montrachet is located next to Puligny Montrachet, in a part of Burgundy where Village wines and great Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards are close to each other.
Appellation: The wine comes from the Chassagne Montrachet appellation, a Village origin within the Côte de Beaune.
Soil: The vines grow on limestone and clay. Limestone aids drainage and tension, while clay can give more body and structure to the grapes.
Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, the yield is around 40 hl/ha, and the grapes are harvested by hand.
Aging Potential: The wine has an aging potential of 5–7 years, fitting the combination of Village origin, ripe tannins, and oak aging.
Vinification and aging
The vinification follows a classic Burgundian approach with traditional fermentation and controlled oak maturation.
Fermentation: Fermentation takes place in open vats. What are open vats? They are open fermentation tanks in which color, aroma, and tannins are gradually extracted from the skins.
Aging / Oak Maturation: The wine matures for 10–12 months in French oak barrels from Louis Latour's own cooperage, 35% of which are new and medium-toasted. This maturation adds extra roundness, subtle toast, spice, and a slightly creamy texture to the finish.
Grape composition
This red Chassagne Montrachet is made entirely from the classic red grape of Burgundy.
Pinot Noir – Chassagne Montrachet: Pinot Noir gives this wine its ruby red color, cherry fruit, fine tannins, and elegant structure. In Chassagne Montrachet, the grape often takes on a slightly fuller, spicier form than in lighter villages within Burgundy.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Deep ruby red in the glass, with black cherry, liquorice, mocha, and a subtle hint of toasted wood. The taste is full and round, with fresh red fruit, fine spiciness, and a long, lively finish. The oak aging adds extra complexity without masking the Burgundian freshness.
Serving temperature: Serve this Chassagne Montrachet Rouge at 14–15 °C, so that the red fruit remains vibrant and the oak notes emerge beautifully integrated.
Dishes: Excellent with grilled meat, veal filet mignon, roasted poultry, mushroom risotto, and aged cheeses.
Awards
90–91/100, Vert de Vin (2022): Praised for its precise style with fresh red cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, cranberry, blackcurrant, floral notes, subtle toast, spiciness, and a juicy length.
91/100, Wine Spectator (2022): Rated as a vibrant red Burgundy with fresh cherry, raspberry, earthy notes, underbrush, chalky tannins, and a long, balanced finish.
