Louis Latour Santenay Rouge 2022 Santenay, France
Louis Latour Santenay Rouge 2022 comes from the southernmost village of the Côte de Beaune, where red Burgundy is known for its firm structure and full village character. Santenay is often seen as a bridge between the elegance of Volnay and the power of Pommard, which immediately gives this Pinot Noir a clear position within Burgundy. Ripening in stainless steel keeps the wine clear, fruit-driven, and beautifully accessible, with the classic backbone that makes Santenay so recognisable.
Vineyards and region
Santenay is located in the south of the Côte de Beaune, within the Côte d’Or.
Location / Origin: Santenay is the southernmost village of the Côte de Beaune and produces both red and white wines, with the red wines known for their tannins and structure.
Appellation: The wine comes from the Santenay appellation, a Village appellation within Burgundy with a distinct character blending elegance and power.
Soil: The vines grow on rich marl and limestone. Marl gives Pinot Noir more body, while limestone contributes to tension and refinement.
Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 30 years old, the yield is around 40 hl/ha, and the grapes are harvested by hand.
Vinification and ageing
The vinification focuses on fruit, freshness, and a pure expression of Santenay.
Fermentation: Fermentation traditionally takes place in open cuves. What are open cuves? They are open fermentation vats where colour, aroma, and tannins are gradually extracted from the skins.
Ageing: The wine ages for 10–12 months in stainless steel tanks. This keeps the red and dark fruit clear and present, while the tannins gently round off without additional oak aromas.
Grape composition
This red Santenay is made entirely from Pinot Noir.
Pinot Noir – Santenay: Pinot Noir gives this wine its ruby red colour, fresh raspberry, cherry, fine tannins, and lively structure. In Santenay, the grape often gains more robustness than in lighter villages of Burgundy.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
Bright ruby red in the glass, with aromas of raspberry, blackberry, and forest floor. The taste is round and fresh, with cherry, liquorice, and supple tannins. The finish remains juicy, pleasant, and beautifully balanced.
Serving temperature: Serve this Santenay Rouge at 14–15 °C, so that the red fruit remains lively and the tannins feel supple.
Dishes: Excellent with rabbit terrine, beef in red wine sauce, foie gras with apple, and Brie.
