Alsace

Order Alsace wine

A sunny and dry climate, a huge variety of soil types, and a wide selection of grape varieties. That's what sums up the Alsace wine region. It's a unique wine region in the far north of France, offering a vast diversity of wines thanks to its ideal ingredients. A truly special wine region, with so much to discover.

The reputation of Alsace wines

Winemaking in Alsace owes its origins first and foremost to the Romans. They ensured that Alsace became one of Europe's most prestigious wine regions during the Middle Ages. No celebration went by without glasses of Alsatian wine being well-filled. Through its ups and downs, Alsace has maintained this reputation thanks to passionate winemakers, and it has always remained a fascinating and unique wine region. Furthermore, Alsace is a leader in organic wine production. The climate, with abundant sunshine and little rain, makes the region ideal for producing organic wines. For centuries, Alsace has been accustomed to growing wines without chemical pesticides.

The special terroir of Alsace

Alsace is protected from the ocean by the Vosges Mountains. This also makes it one of the few French regions with the lowest rainfall. Despite its northern location, the region enjoys as many hours of sunshine as the south of France. Grapes from the Alsace wine region enjoy the ideal climate on the slopes of the Vosges Mountains, resulting in grapes with refined aromas. The soil also plays a significant role in the characteristics of the grape varieties. No other wine region boasts such diverse soil types as Alsace, ranging from granite, limestone, and sandstone to marl and clay. This forms the basis for the wine's character. There are 51 sites in Alsace where the combination of climate, location, and soil structure is so unique that they have been awarded Grand Cru status.

The grape varieties in Alsace

The vast majority of wines produced are varietal wines, meaning they are made from a single grape variety. The so-called noble grape varieties of Alsace are Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, and Muscat. Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Sylvaner also play an important role. Besides thousands of winegrowers, Alsace also boasts trading houses and cooperatives, with extensive collaborations. A prime example of a leading cooperative is Wolfberger. Founded in 1902, they collaborate with no fewer than 800 local winegrowers. This collaboration results in exquisite wines of high quality. Those seeking class, elegance, and refinement can visit the centuries-old Mure winery. Founded in 1650, this winery has been at the forefront ever since. The strength of the winery lies in the Clos St. Landelin vineyard, where they have planted classic grape varieties. These vineyards grow Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, and Pinot Noir with incredible success. This family-run winery knows exactly what the grapes need and knows how to utilize the diversity Alsace has to offer.
