Of all the regions in Italy, Lombardy has the highest population. Centered on the famous capital, Milan, Lombardy is the so-called economic engine of Italy. But it also produces excellent wines. A unique feature of Lombardy is that the wine in this region is produced at altitudes that vary enormously. The famous Valtellina vineyards begin at an altitude of 235 meters, but wines are also produced at altitudes as high as 765 meters. The varying conditions, thanks to the influences of the mountains, rivers, and plains, result in Italian wines of enormous diversity.

Quality wines from Lombardy, Italy

Lombardy's wine history only began in the mid-20th century. The north is dominated by the Alps, but the large lakes also play a significant role in the region's climatic conditions. Lake Como, Lake Iseo, Lake Maggiore, and Lake Garda temper the climate, which has a positive effect on wine production. Despite its great diversity, Lombardy offers five wines with the highest Italian DOCG quality label and 20 wines with a DOC quality label. The most important wine regions are Franciacorta, Valtellina, Oltrepo Paves, and Lake Garda.

The Franciacorta sparkling wine

Franciacorte is a well-known name from sunny Lombardy. This sparkling wine is considered one of Italy's finest. Like Champagne, it undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle, but offers much more attractive value. The most commonly used grapes for sparkling wines are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Gris. The Franciacorta, produced by the Decordi family, is a prime example of Italy's finest sparkling wine. The old, thick vines produce the finest Chardonnay grapes for this refreshing yet rich wine.

Great Nebbiolo wines from Veltellina

As we move further north towards Switzerland, the southern slopes of the Alps are home to red wine grape varieties. The most well-known are the red wines from Valtellina and Oltrepo Pavese. Some wines have even been awarded the highest classification. The common Chiavennasca grape, better known as Nebbiolo, is widely planted here and forms the basis of many high-quality wines.

Wide range of wines from Lombardy

If you prefer white, you'll soon find yourself in the Lugana wine region. This region lies on the southern shore of Lake Garda. The climate here is ideal, and the vines are often planted on terraces with beautiful lake views. A well-known name here is the Zenato winery. It's not only one of the largest producers, but also one of the best. They use the latest techniques, ensuring their wines appeal to a wide audience. One of the most special wines is the white Sante Cristina Chardonnay. An elegant and intense wine with beautifully complex flavors. The Lombardy wine region, perhaps unknown to some, offers a wide range of quality wines. Something for everyone, with the region's renowned sparkling wines playing a prominent role.
