Castello di Neive Barbaresco Riserva Albesani Vigna Santo Stefano 2012, Piedmont, Italy
The Castello di Neive Barbaresco Riserva Albesani Vigna Santo Stefano 2012 is a selection of Nebbiolo sourced from the historic Santo Stefano vineyard in Neive, within the MGA Albesani. What does Riserva mean for Barbaresco? A Riserva must age for a minimum of 50 months, of which at least 9 months must be in wood, which gives the wine extra structure, complexity, and aging potential. In combination with the strong 2012 vintage, this results in a Barbaresco with both power and refinement.
This wine is made entirely from Nebbiolo and meets the stricter aging requirements of Barbaresco Riserva DOCG.
Origin: Albesani – Vigna Santo Stefano, Neive
The Santo Stefano vineyard is located within the MGA Albesani in the municipality of Neive.
-
Albesani MGA, Neive: recognized cru within Barbaresco DOCG.
-
Vigna Santo Stefano: historic plot with a reputation for structure and depth.
-
Southwestern exposure: optimal sun exposure for full ripening.
-
Calcareous marl soils: provide tension and aromatic precision.
These conditions yield Nebbiolo with firm, ripe tannins and distinct layering.
Grape and Vinification
Nebbiolo – Albesani Vigna Santo Stefano, Neive
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening grape with high natural acidity and pronounced tannins. In 2012, warm, dry summer months led to concentrated grapes with ripe structure and balanced acidity.
Vinification takes place with controlled extraction to balance color and tannins. Subsequently, the wine ages for a minimum of 50 months, in accordance with Riserva regulations, further increasing complexity and refinement.
Character and Aging Potential of 2012
In the glass, this Barbaresco Riserva 2012 displays a garnet red color with evolution towards brick-like hues, fitting its development. The vintage is known for ripe red fruit, roses, spices, and earthy nuances. Thanks to the combination of concentrated fruit, ripe tannins, and long aging, this wine has now developed secondary and tertiary aromas, while still possessing aging potential.
Serve around 16–18 °C to optimally bring out its structure and aromatic complexity.
