Vintage Report

2016 was an exceptional vintage in Barbaresco, considered one of the best of the decade. The growing season was well-balanced, resulting in wines with concentration, freshness, and perfectly ripe tannins.

Castello di Neive Barbaresco Riserva Albesani Vigna Santo Stefano 2016, Piedmont, Italy

The Castello di Neive Barbaresco Riserva Albesani Vigna Santo Stefano 2016 comes from the historic Santo Stefano vineyard within the MGA Albesani in Neive. What does Riserva mean for Barbaresco? A Barbaresco Riserva must age for at least 50 months, of which at least 9 months in wood, which develops extra structure, depth, and aging potential in the wine. Combined with the exceptional 2016 vintage, this results in a Barbaresco with classic balance and impressive aging power.

This wine is made entirely from Nebbiolo and meets the stricter aging requirements of the Barbaresco Riserva DOCG.

Origin: Albesani – Vigna Santo Stefano, Neive

The Santo Stefano vineyard is located within the MGA Albesani, in the municipality of Neive.

  • Albesani MGA, Neive: recognized cru within Barbaresco DOCG.

  • Vigna Santo Stefano: historic plot with a reputation for structure and elegance.

  • Southwest exposure: optimal phenolic ripening of Nebbiolo.

  • Calcareous marl soils: provide tension, precision, and aromatic finesse.

This combination produces Nebbiolo with ripe tannins and pronounced complexity.

Grape and vinification

Nebbiolo – Albesani Vigna Santo Stefano, Neive
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening grape with high natural acidity and firm tannins. In 2016, a balanced growing season with sufficient rain in spring and a stable, warm summer ensured perfect ripeness and harmonious structure.

Fermentation takes place with controlled extraction to ensure a balance between fruit and tannin. Subsequently, the wine ages for a minimum of 50 months in accordance with the Riserva regulations, refining its structure and developing additional layers.

Character and aging potential of 2016

In the glass, this Barbaresco Riserva 2016 displays a deep garnet red color. The vintage is considered one of the best of the decade in Barbaresco, with concentration, freshness, and perfect tannin ripeness. Aromas of red fruit, roses, spices, and earthy notes are supported by a powerful yet refined structure.

Thanks to the combination of ripe tannins and lively acidity, this wine possesses exceptional aging potential and can develop further over many years.

Serve around 16–18 °C to optimally experience the balance between structure and aromatic depth.
