TorCalvano Nobile di Montepulciano 2018 Tuscany, Italy
TorCalvano Nobile di Montepulciano 2018 is a classic red Tuscan wine made from Prugnolo Gentile, the local Sangiovese clone of Montepulciano. The grapes come from the TorCalvano Gracciano estate in the municipality of Montepulciano, at an altitude of approximately 350m. 20 months of aging in large Slavonian oak barrels gives the wine more refinement, structure, and depth, while maintaining an elegant and fresh style. Nobile di Montepulciano was described as “the king of all wines” as early as 1685 by Francesco Redi, a historical reference that perfectly suits the stately origin of this DOCG.
Vineyards and Region
TorCalvano originates from Montepulciano, in southern Tuscany, where Sangiovese has played a leading role for centuries.
• Location / Origin: The grapes come from vineyards on the TorCalvano Gracciano estate, in the Gracciano area within the municipality of Montepulciano. This area is located in the province of Siena, between Valdichiana and Val d’Orcia.
• Altitude: The vineyards are located at an altitude of approximately 350m. This location helps to combine ripeness, freshness, and aromatic tension in the grapes.
• Planting Density: The vineyards are planted with 4,000–5,000 vines per hectare. This planting density supports controlled growth and good concentration in the fruit.
• Yield: The average yield is around 7 tons of grapes per hectare, with a wine yield of approximately 65%. This aligns with a style where balance, elegance, and tannin structure are important.
Grape Composition
This Nobile di Montepulciano is made from Prugnolo Gentile.
• Prugnolo Gentile – Montepulciano: What is Prugnolo Gentile? Prugnolo Gentile is the local Sangiovese clone of Montepulciano and gives this wine its red fruit, floral aromas, fresh acidity, and refined tannin structure.
Vinification and Aging
The vinification focuses on classic Tuscan structure, with long aging in large oak barrels.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 26–28 °C. Skin contact lasts a minimum of 15 days, carefully extracting color, aroma, and tannins from the grapes.
• Aging / Oak Maturation: The wine ages for 20 months in 35 hl Slavonian oak barrels. Large Slavonian oak provides refinement, roundness, and structure, without overpowering the fruit with wood.
• Bottle Aging: After oak aging, the wine ages for a minimum of 6 months in bottle. This allows the tannin structure to soften further and the elegant style of Prugnolo Gentile to integrate better.
• Aging Potential: TorCalvano Nobile di Montepulciano has an aging potential of up to 15 years. The combination of Sangiovese acidity, oak maturation, and tannins provides the wine with a sufficient foundation to develop further.
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions
This Nobile di Montepulciano has delicate, floral, and refined aromas. The taste is balanced and elegant, with fresh tension and a velvety tannin structure. The finish remains smooth, refined, and long.
• Serving Temperature: Serve this Nobile di Montepulciano at 16–18 °C, allowing the floral notes, fresh structure, and soft tannins to harmonize beautifully.
• Dishes: Excellent with rabbit, stuffed dishes with liver, pork stews, mushrooms, roasted meats, and aged Tuscan cheeses.
