The 2023 vintage in South Africa is rated with an excellent score of 90 points. The wines are described as still youthful and tannic, indicating good structure and aging potential.

This beautiful red wine is made by none other than Paul Boutinot of Waterkloof Estate. He purchased this beautiful winery, located on Schaapenberg Hill in Somerset West, Stellenbosch, in 2004. From the vineyards, you have a stunning view of False Bay in the Cape. The ocean is only three kilometers from the vineyards, which influences the harvest. According to Paul, this vineyard is unique and recognizable because of its cool climate. The cool climate is something he particularly appreciates, as it produces honest and full-bodied wines. Paul is a great lover of classic wines like Chablis, Paulliac, and Barolo, and it was precisely this that inspired him. He wanted to make a red wine that would reveal the classic flavors of the Syrah grape. This is why he called this red Old School Syrah.

Wood aging for the False Bay Old School Syrah

The Syrah grapes grow on the ancient southern slopes of Schaapenberg, allowing the bunches to receive an even distribution of sunlight. A fresh ocean breeze provides the necessary cooling and contributes to the slow ripening of the harvest. Today, the vineyard is mature and produces unique, full-bodied bunches. These are all harvested by hand to preserve the wine's purity and suppleness. Upon arrival, the bunches are pressed, and this red Old School Syrah is then aged for several months in oak barrels in the cellars in False Bay.

Wow, settle in, because this is no ordinary glass of wine! Upon opening, black fruit bursts forth, accompanied by a touch of spice and cedarwood. Its deep, almost black, red color clings tightly to the glass. The aroma offers an overwhelming bouquet of blackberries, cherries, and cassis, with hints of spice and pepper. On the palate, it delivers a spicy, spicy note, accompanied by plums and cherries. Swirl this red False Bay Old School Syrah on your palate, and you'll also taste notes of mocha and roasted nuts.
