La Fuga Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 Tuscany, Italy
La Fuga Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2019 is a powerful, classic Brunello from Tenuta La Fuga, the Montalcino estate of Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari. The wine comes from vineyards southwest of Montalcino, on the historic side of Camigliano, where Sangiovese ripens at an altitude of about 350 m. The long maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels gives this Brunello its depth, firm structure, and long aging potential, while the 2019 vintage excels in berry fruit, orange peel, flowers, cedar, and refined earthy notes.
Vineyards and region
La Fuga comes from Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, one of the most prestigious appellations for Sangiovese in Tuscany.
• Location / Origin: The grapes come from Tenuta La Fuga, southwest of Montalcino, on the historic side of Camigliano. This location gives the wine a distinct Montalcino character, with ripe fruit, structure, and long development.
• Exposure: The vineyards have a southwest exposure towards the Tyrrhenian Sea. This exposure helps the Sangiovese grapes ripen fully and contributes to concentration in the skin.
• Altitude: The vineyards are located at approximately 350 m above sea level. This altitude helps combine ripeness with freshness, which is important for a Brunello with long tension.
• Soil: The soil consists of medium-heavy clay with a lot of skeleton material. This stony material ensures drainage and helps the vines produce grapes with concentration and a firm structure.
• Vineyard & Yield: The vineyards are planted with 5,000 vines per hectare and yield an average of 4.5 tons of grapes per hectare. This low yield ensures greater fruit concentration.
Grape composition
This Brunello is made entirely from Sangiovese, the only grape permitted for Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
• 100% Sangiovese – Brunello di Montalcino DOCG: Sangiovese gives La Fuga its red and dark fruit, fresh acidity, firm tannins, and spicy depth. In Montalcino, the grape gains extra power and aging potential, allowing Brunello to develop further for years.
Vinification and aging
The vinification and aging are classic for a serious Brunello, with long barrel aging in large casks.
• Fermentation: The wine ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28 °C, with approximately 4 weeks of skin contact. This long maceration extracts color, structure, and tannin from the Sangiovese grapes.
• Aging / Wood aging: La Fuga ages for at least 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels. The cuvée is traditionally aged in 25 hl Slavonian oak, which adds structure and complexity without coloring the fruit too heavily with wood.
• Bottle aging: After wood aging, the wine continues to age in the bottle before release. This extra rest helps refine the tannins and brings the powerful structure together better.
• Alcohol percentage: At 14.5% alcohol, this Brunello has sufficient power for its concentrated fruit, long wood aging, and firm tannins.
• Aging potential: La Fuga Brunello di Montalcino has an aging potential of up to 30 years. This matches the combination of Sangiovese acidity, low yields, tannins, and long aging.
Tasting notes and serving suggestions
La Fuga Brunello di Montalcino 2019 opens with berries, orange peel, flowers, cedar, walnut, and wet leaves. The taste is full and concentrated, with firm yet velvety tannins and a juicy texture. The finish is long, powerful, and harmonious.
• Serving temperature: Serve this Brunello at 16–18 °C, so that the ripe fruit, tannins, and earthy development come together beautifully.
• Dishes: Excellent with game, red meat, lamb, stews, hard aged cheeses, and pork stuffed with duck and wild fennel.
