The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

The port house Cálem Porto was founded in 1859 by António Alves Cálem. Since its inception, it has invested considerable time and energy in producing high-quality port wines at very reasonable prices. This has resulted in high market recognition and several international awards. Calem Porto is the market leader in Portugal. There isn't a single store in Portugal that sells drinks without Calem in its product range. The familiar look of the bottles is also recognizable worldwide. We were therefore quite surprised to see the labels gradually getting a new look. But, once again, these beautiful bottles are perfectly recognizable!

The Tinta Roriz and Touriga Nacional grape varieties for this port are grown in the best locations along the Douro River. Here, the grapes receive the perfect amount of sunshine, the coolness of the Douro, and sufficient nutrients from the soil. At peak ripeness, the grapes are harvested by hand to ensure only the finest juice reaches the bottle—a real achievement! The harvested grapes are transported to the press in small crates to prevent damage during transport. After vinification, the wine is aged extensively in oak barrels for three years. This three-year aging gives this Tawny port its depth and richness.

Calem's most beloved and most-drinked port, this Tawny, with its full-bodied character, is a true treat. Upon pouring, we immediately see the recognizable color of a good Tawny port: a deep ruby red with a brown rim. The aroma reveals a fusion of notes of nuts, red fruit like wild strawberries, and ripe cherries. Finally, a lovely hint of vanilla and oak. The palate is delicious, soft, and refined with hints of sweet cherry, blackberry, and currant. A lovely, long, refined finish with a medium length. This port is perfect with delicious chocolate desserts or aged cheeses. It's no wonder this is one of Calem's best-selling ports!
