Jakkalsvlei Mount Cuvée is a full-bodied Cape Blend of Pinotage and Shiraz from the Western Cape. This wine holds a special place in the Jakkalsvlei story: together with Hanepoot, Mount Cuvée was one of the first wines bottled under the Jakkalsvlei label in 2008. The style is rich, round, and layered, featuring black cherries, ripe plums, blackberries, white pepper, vanilla, cloves, and a long, velvety finish.
Mount Cuvée comes from the Western Cape, around Jakkalsvlei in the Garden Route.
Location / Origin: Jakkalsvlei is located near Herbertsdale, at the foot of the Langeberg mountains and about 40 km from the Indian Ocean.
Region: The wine comes from the Western Cape, where altitude, oceanic influences, and dry heat converge. This gives the grapes ripeness, but also freshness and tension.
Climate & Influences: Herbertsdale has good water sources, fertile soils, and a warm, dry climate. The influence of the South Coast helps provide the wines with clear fruit and balance.
Name: Jakkalsvlei literally means "Jackal’s Marsh". The name refers to the foxes, jackals, and wild cats that used to be spotted in the Langeberg and around the farm.
Vinification is focused on ripe dark fruit, soft tannins, and a full-bodied Cape Blend style.
Fermentation: The wine is fermented in oak barrels, giving it extra structure and spicy depth from an early stage.
Aging / Oak treatment: The aging also takes place in oak. This provides aromas of vanilla, cigar box, cloves, and added roundness to the ripe fruit.
Structure: The wine is full-bodied, with ripe, fine tannins and a layered finish. The combination of Pinotage and Shiraz provides fruit, spice, and South African recognizability all at once.
Alcohol percentage: With 14.5% alcohol, Mount Cuvée has clear power and warmth, befitting its ripe fruit and full structure.
This Cape Blend combines Pinotage with Shiraz.
Pinotage – Western Cape: Pinotage gives the wine its ripe plums, black cherries, round structure, and typical South African character.
Shiraz – Western Cape: Shiraz brings blackberries, white pepper, spice, color, and extra depth to the blend.
