Cantina Andrian was the first cooperative in Alto Adige, founded in 1893. Since then, its members have always strived to produce high-quality wines, naturally with the associated ups and downs, for example, due to war and other problems. But the farmers have always succeeded in maintaining a high level of quality. However, they were forced to conclude that their cooperative was actually too small to remain completely independent. This led them to join Cantina Terlan, the cooperative in the neighboring village, in 2008. They have, however, managed to preserve their own identity through their own wines and bottles. The vineyards are situated on the slopes along the Adige River, west of Bolzano, in the area where a separate wine called "Terlaner" is also permitted. The vineyards are situated just below the mountains, with views of the mighty Mendel and the emblematic Gantkofel. The soils here are very diverse in character, due to the continuous movement of the earth, under the influence of glaciers, and the transport of rock by rivers. As a result, we find quartz, porphyry—a volcanic rock—as well as dolomite and limestone from the Mendel Mountains. The mixture of calcareous clay and dolomite gravel, in particular, provides the ideal soil for vines. The loose soil structure creates a perfect balance, retaining moisture well and allowing the vines to establish deep roots. This ideal situation is found on the rolling hills east of the village of Andriano, at an altitude of 260 to 340 meters. Here, late-ripening grapes thrive, thanks to abundant sunshine. The grapes also benefit from a cool mountain breeze, especially the white grapes with a more northerly exposure. These conditions produce wines with wonderful acidity and intense freshness—the hallmarks of the wines of Alto Adige and Cantina Andrian.
