Perhaps one of the most interesting wineries in Italy. Perhaps even in the entire world. The timeline of Borgogno alone could fill three history books. A remarkable history, which has culminated in one of the most iconic wineries in the world. The story of Borgogno takes us back to the 18th (!) century, to 1761 to be precise. Bartolomeo Borgogno founded the eponymous winery in the tiny, yet almost legendary, village of Barolo. After many generations, the winery is still owned by the same family. The history has seen many ups and downs. For example, in the early 20th century, the wines were incredibly popular with the Tsars of Russia, for example. The real expansion of Borgogno wines began about a hundred years ago, around 1920. Cesare Borgogno, a scion of the Borgogno dynasty, took over the daily management. He ensured that Borgogno wines were widely exported. He is the reason that Borgogno wines are so popular today in Europe, the United States and Argentina.Borgogno Winery remains incredibly grateful to Cesare Borgogno for his dedication. This has made Borgogno's wines truly iconic. The winery developed a special wine for him, the development of which took a remarkable 50 years. This is Borgogno Cesare, a Barolo wine made with wine from four vintages. The most recent contained wines from the 2004, 1998, 1996, and 1982 vintages, all considered phenomenal. Unfortunately, the last edition is currently sold out, and we're eagerly awaiting the new Borgogno Cesare.
The old vineyards of Borgogno
Borgogno's vineyards are considered among the oldest around the village of Barolo. Although Borgogno is one of the most popular wineries in Piedmont, its vineyards are remarkably small. Barolo owns only 13 hectares of vineyards. Of these, only 9 hectares are planted with the star of Barolo wines: the Nebbiolo grape.Borgogno makes the best Barolo wines
The Nebbiolo grape is responsible for the dazzling Barolo wines. Thanks to the excellent location of Borgogno's vineyards, the quality of Nebbiolo is astronomically high. This creates the classic, traditional flavors in Borgogno Barolo. Be quick, though, as regular Borgogno Barolo is consistently sold out year after year. However, Borgogno still boasts many special wines in its cellars. Rumor has it that you can still find Barolo wines from the 1960s there, though this is a rumor that is neither known nor denied. Currently, Borgogno has an older vintage for sale, the Borgogno Barolo Riserva 1982. This Barolo wine, almost forty years old, is currently at its peak thanks to its enormous aging potential.
