Esk Valley Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand

Esk Valley Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc demonstrates how exciting Sauvignon Blanc can be when you choose one specific origin within Marlborough. This wine comes entirely from the Awatere Valley, a cooler sub-region known for its tauter style and spicy tension. The result is not a standard Sauvignon Blanc, but a wine with more depth and structure, without losing its fresh character.

Origin: Awatere Valley, Marlborough

The Awatere Valley is located further south and closer to the ocean than the more famous Wairau Valley. As a result, temperatures are lower and the grapes ripen more slowly, which directly influences the style of the wine.

  • Cooler location: provides more tension and refinement.
  • Gravel and clay soils: give both freshness and structure.
  • Slower ripening: ensures more intense aromas and better balance.

These conditions give the wine a distinct character that you won't find in every Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

Grape and vinification

Sauvignon Blanc – Awatere Valley
Sauvignon Blanc is known for its aromatic power, but here it gains extra depth due to its origin and vinification.

The grapes are harvested per plot and processed immediately to preserve freshness. Fermentation takes place at a low temperature in stainless steel. After fermentation, the wine remains on the lees, with regular bâtonnage applied to build extra roundness and structure.

Character and style

In the glass, this wine immediately shows what it stands for. Bright citrus, passionfruit, and gooseberry stand out, followed by fresh green notes such as snow peas and fresh herbs. On the palate, it is remarkably fuller than expected, with a beautiful tension that keeps everything in balance. The finish is crisp, fresh, and lingers long.

About Esk Valley

Esk Valley is a New Zealand winery known for its focus on origin and minimal intervention. Instead of blending everything into one uniform style, the winery deliberately chooses specific sub-regions such as the Awatere Valley. In doing so, they create wines that are not only typical Marlborough but also clearly show exactly where they come from.
