The origins of Poggio Antico

Poggio Antico was founded in the 1970s and quickly developed into a quality estate with a distinctive vision. The name literally means "old hill" and refers to the elevated position of the vineyards, one of the defining factors in the style of the wines.

Why is Poggio Antico often mentioned among the top Brunello wines?
Because the house consistently focuses on height, freshness and balance within an appellation that is also known for power.

Vineyards and location

The Poggio Antico vineyards are among the highest in Montalcino, with plots reaching over 500 meters above sea level. This altitude ensures cooler nights and a longer ripening period, essential for aromatic complexity and structure.

The soils consist of limestone, clay and galestro, which contributes to tension, finesse and a clear terroir expression.

Grape and style

Poggio Antico naturally uses only Sangiovese for Brunello, as prescribed within the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. However, for some of its IGTs (or Super Tuscans), it also uses grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon.

The style of the house is characterized by:

  • elegance and precision
  • fresh tension
  • refined tannins
  • great maturing potential

The wines combine power with finesse and develop beautifully over many years.

Brunello di Montalcino by Poggio Antico

Brunello di Montalcino from Poggio Antico is known for its balance and transparency. Thanks to its high altitude, the wines retain freshness, even in warm years, which sets them apart within the appellation.

These Brunellos are suitable for long maturation and are often only fully opened after several years of bottle development.

IGT from Poggio Antico

Poggio Antico also produces perhaps one of Italy's most interesting IGTs, Le Martine. According to them, this is where Bordeaux meets Montalcino. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese is therefore not something you encounter very often, but it's definitely worth trying.

Vinification and philosophy

Poggio Antico combines traditional winemaking with modern precision. The focus is on vineyard selection, controlled fermentation, and patient aging, allowing the grape and its origins to fully express themselves.

Wood use is supportive and aimed at structure, not dominance.

Who is Poggio Antico interesting for?

Poggio Antico particularly appeals to enthusiasts who:

  • Brunello di Montalcino, and IGTs search with elegance
  • value terroir and altitude
  • wines that want to develop over time

The wines are particularly suitable for lovers of classic Tuscan wine with finesse.
