Ropiteau was founded in the mid-19th century, in 1848 to be precise. Its founder was Jean Ropiteau, who gave the winery his own name. This man had both a passion for and knowledge of wines. When the railway near Meursault, Burgundy, was widened in 1848, he immediately saw the opportunity to establish his winery there. The infrastructure for broad expansion was now in place. The château continued to grow and develop in the decades that followed. In 1940, when the winery was in the hands of grandson Auguste Ropiteau, they purchased their own vineyards and cellars within the Meursault appellation. This is where the wonderful story became even more wonderful.
