Spain at its very best. Especially for Rioja lovers, the wines from Bodegas Valdemar are hard to beat. Outstanding and excellent. Highly complex and distinctive, exactly what you'd expect from Rioja. But we were especially surprised by the price: who would have believed such a high-quality Rioja wine existed in this price range?

The Spanish wines from Rioja

Valdemar Winery is located in perhaps the most beautiful, and certainly the most famous, Spanish wine region: La Rioja. Situated in the northwest of the country, La Rioja has played a significant role in Spanish viticulture. Its robust and powerful wines are a testament to the flavor and character inherent in Spanish wines.

Bodegas Valdemar has an impressive history in the Rioja region. It all began in 1889 when the winery was founded. It has been owned by the same family ever since: the Bujanda family. When three brothers, Carlos, Jesus, and Pilar, took over the winery in the 1980s, everything initially went well. The winery was modernized, and quality improved rapidly. However, the brothers didn't get along, and in 2007, the various estates on the Iberian island were divided. Jesus Bujanda took control of Bodegas Valdemar in the Rioja region.

The vineyards of Bodegas Valdemar

Unique to the wines and the grapes used is that everything comes from Bodegas Valdemar's own vineyards. While many wineries purchase additional grapes from small local wineries, Bodegas Valdemar manages everything in-house. A unique practice in Rioja. This allows the winery to control everything and apply its expertise to the grapes and the final wines.

Valdemar wines are known for their generous oak aging. This oak aging was essentially copied from Bordeaux. Rioja was created by Bordeaux winemakers fleeing the devastating phylloxera. The Bordeaux winemaking method was also applied in Rioja, a method still used today.

The wines of Bodegas Valdemar

Besides the Rioja classic, Tempranillo, Valdemar has also planted less common grape varieties such as Graicano, Mazuelo, and the lesser-known Maturana. Uniquely, Bodegas Valdemar, unlike many other wineries, also produces white wines from Rioja. The most special of these is undoubtedly the Conde Valdemar Rioja Tempranillo Blanco: a white wine made from the Tempranillo grape—unbelievably unique! The Conde Valdemar Rioja Tempranillo is also highly recommended. This red wine received an 8+ in the most recent edition of the Grote Hamersma, a remarkably high score for a wine in this price range.
