Situated in the heart of the Palatinate, one of Germany's most beautiful wine regions, it's sometimes affectionately called the Burgundy of Germany, simply because the wines are so incredibly good. Weingut Von Winning has been a fixture in German winemaking since the mid-19th century. However, the winery has had a turbulent history. After numerous name changes and changes of ownership, it has now entered calmer waters. Since 2007, the Von Winning Winery has been part of a group that also includes, for example, Dr. Deinhard wines. The name Von Winning has remained, as a tribute to the family that made Von Winning wines so famous.

The wines of Von Winning from Palatinate

Von Winning is located in Deidesheim, a municipality just a half-hour drive from Mannheim. Deidesheim is an important municipality in German winemaking. The surrounding area boasts vineyards belonging to Reinhardt, Georg Siben, and Villa Wolf, all leading wineries. It's also situated on the famous Weinstrasse, which connects the highlights of the Palatinate. The location is therefore undoubtedly ideal.

Because Von Winning has been a particularly large player for over a century and a half, they arguably have the finest vineyards. However, they only own 38 hectares. Consequently, Von Winning's yield is low. They produce "only" 300,000 bottles per year. That seems like a lot, but due to the enormous popularity of Von Winning wines, many varieties are routinely sold out every year.

The Riesling from Von Winning

The most important grape for Von Winning is undoubtedly the distinctive Riesling. Over 80% of Von Winning's vineyards are planted with this elegant yet distinctive grape. However, the vineyards are all unique, small estates. At each estate, Von Winning creates a distinct style of Riesling. Paradiesgarten, for example, differs significantly from Pechstein, while vineyards like Villa Niederberger, Grainhubel, and Langenmorgen are also true gems within Von Winning.

What is the most beautiful wine from Von Winning?

Besides the well-known Riesling grape, there's certainly room for other varieties in Von Winning's vineyards. White grape varieties like Weissburgunder and Sauvignon Blanc have also established themselves in the vineyards. The latter, in particular, has been a major success in recent years. While Sauvignon Blanc is a relatively unconventional grape in German winemaking, Von Winning Sauvignon Blanc II is considered one of the finest wines among connoisseurs.

Besides white grape varieties, there's also room for red grape varieties. It's no surprise that Pinot Noir is planted here. However, there are also spots reserved for Cabernet Sauvignon, Dornfelder, and Merlot. Together with the well-known Pinot Noir, these grapes form the incredibly successful Von Winning Win Win Rot.
