A pure and close-knit family business. Anyone who follows the path from its founding to the present day will notice that several generations have been at the helm. Each generation had a different vision or approach. However, all the generations behind Weltevrede have contributed something to the winery. This has resulted in them being a leader not only in the Robertson region of South Africa, but also delighting people elsewhere in the world day in and day out with their phenomenal South African wines.
Wines from South Africa
Winemaking in South Africa has been a period of ups and downs. It was already being cultivated there during the Dutch era, but it truly developed into a significant part of the economy during the 20th century. Until recently, South African wines had a mediocre reputation. The focus was primarily on quality, less on quality. Since then, many wineries, including Weltevrede, have changed course, and today, more and more high-quality wines are being produced in this African country.
The wines of Weltevrede
Weltevrede is a family estate passed down through generations. It began in 1912, when Klaas Jonker purchased the estate in Robertson. He believed it was a good location for winemaking. It started relatively small, but when his son Japie took charge in 1933, the vineyards were expanded. The real success came with the arrival of the third generation, Lourens Jonker. He had actually completed a viticultural degree and gained extensive experience at qualified vineyards in Europe and America. Under his supervision, Weltevrede grew from a mere 65 hectares to a substantial 160 hectares. Only recently did he hand over the reins to his Philip Jonker, a respected winemaker specializing in the beloved Chardonnay grape.

Son Philip Jonker has been helping his father Lourens since 1997. This is also reflected in Weltevrede's range: Chardonnay has truly taken on a prominent role. For example, Weltevrede Vanilla Chardonnay has been the winery's most popular wine for years and has brought many a smile. There's also a new series of high-end wines where Philip has truly showcased his talent. Take the Weltevrede Place of Rocks Chardonnay, for example. The winery has also built an excellent reputation for dessert wines. The so-called Ouma and Oupa se Wyn Weltevrede are both red and white dessert wines and are among the best in this wine country.
