Vintage Report

The 2022 vintage had a dry and warm start, but rain in August provided cooling and hydration. This resulted in grapes with an excellent balance of sugar, acidity, and aromatic power.

A&G Folonari B.S.T. Sangiovese & Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 Toscana IGT, Italy

A&G Folonari B.S.T. Sangiovese & Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 is a modern Tuscan red wine from Tenuta Vigne a Porrona in the Maremma. B.S.T. stands for Baby Super Tuscan, a fruit-driven and youthful interpretation of the famous Tuscan blend style that combines Sangiovese and international grape varieties. After a dry and warm start to the growing season, the 2022 vintage received rain in August at just the right time, allowing the grapes to complete their ripening with a beautiful balance of sugar, acidity, and aromatic power.

Vineyards and region

This Toscana IGT comes from Tenuta Vigne a Porrona, an estate in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma.

Location / Origin: Tenuta Vigne a Porrona is located in the municipality of Cinigiano, in the province of Grosseto. The estate is situated in the inland Maremma, between the Ombrone valley, the Val d'Orcia, and the western slopes of Monte Amiata.

Altitude: The vineyards are situated around 350 m above sea level. This elevation provides the grapes with sufficient sun ripeness, while the ventilation in this part of the Maremma helps maintain freshness and aromatic tension.

Soil: The soil consists of medium-heavy clay with a lot of skeletal material. This means there is a lot of stony material in the soil, which contributes to drainage and concentration in the grapes.

Vineyard Management: The vines are planted at 5,000 plants per hectare and are trained using the low cordon pruning system. This planting density and pruning method help to control growth and produce grapes with sufficient concentration.

Grape composition

This B.S.T. is made from Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, the classic combination behind many modern Tuscan red wines.

Sangiovese – Toscana IGT: Sangiovese gives the wine its fresh red fruit, floral notes, vibrant acidity, and Tuscan tension. This grape forms the elegant, fruity core of the blend.

Cabernet Sauvignon – Toscana IGT: Cabernet Sauvignon brings power, structure, and greater depth to the wine. The grape complements the fruity side of Sangiovese with firmer tannins and a fuller mouthfeel.

Vinification and aging

The vinification focuses on fruit, freshness, and a smooth, direct style.

Vintage & Grape Ripening: 2022 began with little rain and above-average temperatures in winter, followed by a dry spring and rising temperatures in early May. The rain in August brought cooling and hydration, after which mild, dry, and fresh weather allowed the grapes to ripen further with great aromatic potential.

Fermentation: The wine ferments in stainless steel tanks and undergoes approximately 4 weeks of skin contact. This maceration provides color, fruit intensity, and structure, while stainless steel keeps the fresh fruit expression clear.

Aging: The wine ages entirely in stainless steel. This ensures that the cherry fruit, floral notes, and fresh Tuscan style remain central.

Alcohol Content: At 14.5% alcohol, this B.S.T. has sufficient power for the combination of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, while the fresh structure keeps the wine smooth and lively.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, this B.S.T. is ruby red with purple reflections. The aroma opens with cherry, orange peel, and candied fruit. The taste is fresh, smooth, and persistent, with a clear structure that is present without being heavy.

Serving Temperature: Serve this Toscana IGT at 15–18 °C, so that the fruit, soft tannins, and fresh structure come together beautifully.

Food Pairings: Delicious with pasta with meat sauce, red meat, Tuscan cold cuts, pizza with Mediterranean toppings, finger food, and appetizers.
