From Rugby Field to Vineyard: A Legendary Story
The sporting world was astonished when young Albertus Viljoen van der Merwe, affectionately known as "Alvi," scored a historic try against the then undefeated All-Blacks rugby team. This achievement earned Alvi a place in the prestigious South African national rugby team, the Springboks, as their 221st player. But Alvi's legacy extends beyond the rugby field. His winery in Worcester, South Africa, continues the tradition of excellence. Since its inception, Alvi's Drift has produced wines that are recognized worldwide for both quality and value. The 221 series is a tribute to Alvi's legendary achievement and the Springbok team.
The Refined Creation of Alvi's Drift 221 Special Cuvée
Each grape is carefully hand-picked in the cool morning hours, with only the finest bunches being selected. After destemming, the grape varieties are vinified separately. Fermentation takes place in Roto tanks, ensuring optimal extraction of color and aromas. Depending on the variety, some of the wine is aged in French and American oak barrels, while the rest is stored in stainless steel tanks. The result of this careful aging and blending is a wine with a harmonious balance of complexity and freshness.
This Special Cuvée shines with a deep ruby red hue. When you swirl the glass, aromas of ripe fruit like plums and cherries emerge, complemented by hints of licorice and spice. The palate is a perfect harmony of fruit and silky tannins, resulting in an elegant wine with a lingering, fruity finish.
