The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

Alvi’s Drift Signature Cabernet Sauvignon is a fruit-forward red wine from Worcester, crafted as part of the family estate’s accessible Signature Selection. This Cabernet Sauvignon combines blackcurrant, spices, and subtle cedarwood with an elegant structure, integrated tannins, and a long, refined finish.

This red wine comes from Alvi’s Drift in Worcester, around the Breede River.

Location / Origin: The vineyards are located in Worcester, where the Breede River runs directly through the family estate and plays an important role in the local microclimate.

Climate & Influences: The Mediterranean microclimate ensures ripe fruit, while the soil diversity and river influence contribute to balance and complexity.

Vineyard Management: The vineyards are sustainably fertilized with natural compost from the farm itself. This supports healthy soils and consistent grape quality.

Vineyard & Harvest: The clusters are selectively hand-harvested in the cool early morning, ensuring that only healthy and optimally ripe grapes reach the cellar.

The vinification is focused on fruit intensity, smooth tannins, and a subtle oak influence.

Harvest & Selection: The hand-harvested grapes are crushed before they go to the fermentation tanks. This allows the extraction of color, fruit, and structure to be carefully controlled.

Fermentation: The fermentation takes about 7 days. During this process, juice is pumped over the skins to add extra color and flavor intensity to the wine.

Maturation / Oak Treatment: Before bottling, the wine is selectively aged for up to 2 months on French oak. This imparts a light touch of cedarwood and extra refinement, without losing the fruit-forward character.

Alcohol content: At 13.5% alcohol, this Cabernet Sauvignon remains smooth and accessible, with enough body for pasta, meat dishes, and mature cheeses.

This wine is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon.

100% Cabernet Sauvignon – Worcester: Cabernet Sauvignon gives this wine its blackcurrant, dark fruit core, spiciness, cedarwood, and elegant tannins. In this Signature style, the emphasis is on ripe fruit, balance, and immediate drinkability.

Alvi's Drift

More about Alvi's Drift

Alvi’s Drift is a family business from Worcester with roots on the Breede River. The name refers to the low-water bridge over the river, built in 1930 by Albertus Viljoen “Oupa Alvi” van der Merwe. His son Bertie started winemaking on the family farm, and today, Alvi van der Merwe produces the estate's award-winning wines. The Signature Selection shows the most accessible side of Alvi’s Drift: fruit-forward, smooth, and made for spontaneous moments where wine should, above all, be enjoyable and affordable.
