The origin, grapes and craftsmanship behind this wine.

Alvi’s Drift Signature Viognier is an aromatic white wine from Worcester, made from 100% Viognier within the fruit-driven Signature Selection. The wine possesses the characteristic richness of Viognier, with ripe yellow peach, spring blossom, roundness, and a soft mid-palate structure, while its fresh acidity makes it highly versatile at the dinner table.

This Viognier comes from Alvi’s Drift in Worcester, around the Breede River.

Location / Origin: The vineyards are situated in Worcester, where the Breede River flows through the family estate and plays a significant role in the local microclimate.

Climate & Influences: The Mediterranean microclimate provides the grapes with ripeness and aromatic intensity, while soil diversity and river influences contribute to balance and complexity.

Vineyard Management: The vineyards are sustainably fertilized with natural compost from the farm itself. This supports healthy soils and consistent quality.

Vineyard & Harvest: The clusters are selectively hand-harvested in the cool early morning, ensuring that only healthy and perfectly ripe grapes are used.

The vinification is focused on aromatic intensity, fresh fruit, and a round, soft texture.

Harvest & Selection: Only premium free-run juice is used. This creates a pure base in which the expressive character of Viognier comes to the fore.

Fermentation: The clarified juice is cold-fermented. This cool fermentation helps keep the aromas of yellow peach and blossom clear and vibrant.

Aging: After fermentation, the wine ages on the lees for several months. This adds extra roundness and a subtle, coating mouthfeel, fitting for the generous style of Viognier.

Alcohol content: With 13.5% alcohol, this white wine has sufficient body, beautifully supported by 6.6 g/l acidity for freshness and balance.

This wine is made entirely from Viognier.

100% Viognier – Worcester: Viognier gives this wine its ripe yellow peach, floral aromas, soft texture, and aromatic breadth. In this Signature style, the grape remains accessible and fruit-driven, with enough tension to stand up well next to spiced dishes.

More about Alvi's Drift

Alvi’s Drift is a family business from Worcester with roots on the Breede River. The name refers to the low-water bridge over the river, built in 1930 by Albertus Viljoen “Oupa Alvi” van der Merwe. His son Bertie started winemaking on the family farm, and today Alvi van der Merwe produces the estate’s award-winning wines. The Signature Selection shows the most accessible side of Alvi’s Drift: fruit-driven, smooth, and made for spontaneous moments where wine should above all be enjoyable and affordable.
