Description
The Antinori Solaia 2020 is an extraordinary example of refinement and elegance in the world of premium wines, a masterpiece that embodies the rich history and expertise of the renowned Antinori winery. Located in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, the Solaia vineyard is a 20-hectare jewel with a southwesterly exposure, nestled between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. This soil provides the perfect environment for growing the grape varieties used in this wine: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Sangiovese. The unique blend of Alberese and Galestro soils ensures exquisite balance and structure.
The 2020 growing season began in Chianti Classico with mild and dry winter weather. Only at the end of March did the area experience a brief cold snap. These climatic conditions led to early budding in the estate's vineyards. Spring brought a fair amount of rainfall and cool temperatures, allowing the vines to grow at an ideal pace. The summer months were warm, without alarming heat spikes, and occasional rain showers ensured optimal growth and development of the bunches. September, the month in which the harvest began, saw light rainfall, especially towards the end of the month, which promoted a gradual ripening phase and brought the fruit to its peak ripeness. The grapes were harvested in late September, beginning with Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, and concluding with Cabernet Sauvignon on October 10th.
The care and attention given both in the vineyards during harvest and in the cellar were of the highest standard. The grapes were destemmed, carefully selected on sorting tables, gently crushed, and then gravity-fed into barrels. It was essential that only the finest berries reached the 60-liter tronconical fermentation tanks. During fermentation and maceration on the skins, it was crucial to maintain the right balance between fruity compounds and tannin quality to optimally express Solaia's softness, aroma, identity, and character. Immediately after pumping over, malolactic fermentation began in barriques, contributing to the wine's complexity and pleasantness. Maturation took place in new French oak barrels for approximately 18 months. The different batches were aged separately and then blended and returned to barrel to complete the aging process.
Historically, Solaia is produced only in exceptional vintages. The Antinori family first produced this wine in 1978, and the initial blend was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc, a formula repeated in 1979. In subsequent years, 20% Sangiovese was introduced, and certain adjustments were made to the ratio of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc until the current blend was established. Solaia was not produced in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, or 1992.
The 2020 Solaia is ruby red in color, with exceptional intensity and complexity on the nose: notes of wild berries, particularly blueberries, raspberries, and blackcurrants, mingle with sweet hints of plums, black cherries, and fresh hints of mint, myrtle, licorice, and floral nuances of lavender. The rich bouquet is complemented by sweet, well-integrated notes of cocoa powder and dried fruit, which give way to spicy hints of cloves and pleasant notes of pink pepper. The palate is rich and filling, after which the wine softens elegantly, with velvety tannins that support a long, lingering finish. The aftertaste echoes notes of mint, licorice, and chocolate detected on the nose.
