Bedoba Saperavi Reserve 2020

Georgia is often called the world's oldest wine country, and with the Bedoba Saperavi Reserve 2020, you can taste why. This wine hails from the heart of Kakheti, where the winery of Nugzar Ksovreli and the Swiss Thierry Fontannaz is housed in a historic cellar dating back to 1533. Their mission: to craft powerful wines with respect for tradition and modern refinement. The grapes come from plots near the Alazani River at an altitude of 400 meters, where conditions are ideal for the iconic Saperavi grape.

Vineyards and region

The vineyards are located north of Alazani, at an altitude of 400 meters. This location combines warm summer days with cool nights, allowing the grapes to ripen and concentrate while retaining their crisp acidity. The Kakheti region is renowned for its deep-colored red wines, and Saperavi is the undisputed star. The combination of old wine country and high-altitude plots produces grapes with character, perfectly suited to Bedoba's expressive style.

Vinification and maturation

What does it mean for a red wine to be partially aged in a qvevri? In the case of this Saperavi Reserve, that traditional Georgian amphora provides structure, grip, and spicy depth. The wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of oak barrels and qvevri, giving it strength while retaining a subtle earthiness. This unique aging method gives the wine its striking balance between concentration and elegance.

Grape composition

Saperavi – 100%
One of the few red-skinned grapes with red flesh. It provides intensity, color, and a natural structure.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

The aroma reveals ripe berries, wild herbs, and floral notes, complemented by a hint of black pepper. The palate is full and deep, with ripe fruit and earthy notes that develop into a long, smooth finish. Serve this wine at 16 to 18°C with slow-cooked venison stew, spiced rack of lamb, or creamy blue cheeses.
