Paradiso 1954 Primitivo, Puglia, Italy
The Paradiso 1954 Primitivo 2022 is one of those wines where everything clicks when you're in the mood for a full-bodied, warm, and rich red wine. This is precisely the style that Primitivo from Puglia is known for: ripe, powerful, and delightfully generous. It's not a wine you carefully analyze, but one you pour and immediately understand why it's so beloved.
What makes this wine extra special is the story behind it. The winery was founded in 1954 by grandfather Angelo Paradiso, in the midst of a period of poverty in Southern Italy. From that foundation, it grew into a producer that today is known for its rich, characterful red wines.
Origin: Puglia, Southern Italy
The grapes come from vineyards around Cerignola, in sunny Puglia.
- Warm climate: ensures fully ripe grapes and full flavors.
- Clay and limestone soils: provide structure and balance.
- Southern Italian style: rich, powerful, and fruit-driven.
These conditions yield Primitivo with that typical intensity and warmth.
Grape and vinification
Primitivo – Puglia
Primitivo is known for its ripe fruit, high alcohol, and full structure.
After harvesting, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures, with skin maceration for 15 to 20 days for extra extraction. The wine then briefly ages in stainless steel, followed by 12 months of wood aging in barriques. Subsequently, the wine returns to stainless steel and receives additional bottle aging before being released to the market.
This process ensures a beautiful balance between power and softness.
Character and style
In the glass, you immediately see a deep ruby red color. The aroma is rich and seductive, with notes of red berries, dried plums, and spicy accents like clove. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with ripe dark fruit and clear yet well-integrated tannins. The oak influence adds extra depth and provides a warm, long finish.
This is one of those wines that pairs perfectly with a well-laden table and long evenings.
