The red wine that started it all for Baron Philippe Rothschild in Chile, a beautiful blend of the finest Chilean grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere, and Syrah. This red Escudo Rojo Original wine is best described as a Bordeaux Blend. It's a special wine because the grapes are grown throughout the Central Valley, ensuring a unique flavor. The very elegant Escudo Rojo Cuvée is the figurehead of Chilean viticulture and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Escudo Rojo means "Red Shield" and refers to the old emblem of the Rothschild family, which Amschel Mayer Rothschild (founder of the Rothschild family) had attached to the gate of his house in Frankfurt in the 18th century. Just over 100 years later, Baron Philippe de Rothschild finally made wine history with his legendary Bordeaux wines. But history is also being made in Chile with the wines of Escudo Rojo.

The history of Escudo Rojo

To confirm the success of the Escudo Rojo Cuvée, first vinified in 1999, the decision was made in 2002 to build a new, modern winery in Chile's Valle de Maipo. It opened just a year later. Until 2014, this Escudo Rojo cuvée was the only wine produced in the then-new, ultramodern winery. Then, Rothschild's oenologists added a whole range of highly elegant varietal wines from the best parcels of the Central Valley. The passion for Baron Philippe de Rothschild's first Chilean wine remains strong and is loved in over 50 countries.

Wood bearing for the Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva

Well, we can tell you this wine is unique and of outstanding quality. The entire wine has been aged in oak for at least 12 months to ensure it becomes a robust, full-bodied wine. This has been achieved, as the aroma reveals a beautiful bouquet of impressions of abundant black fruit with a light dose of vanilla, chocolate, coffee grounds, and toffee. The palate is complex with a soft, delicious edge. Beautiful aromas of berries and blackberries, a touch of black pepper and coffee, complemented by notes of vanilla, cedarwood, and toasted oak. A true Chilean gem.
