Baron Philippe de Rothschild originated in Bordeaux but has since expanded worldwide. His daughter, Philippine de Rothschild, took over the Chilean division, a feat she has been very successful in.

The choice of Chile wasn't entirely coincidental. Several grape varieties, originally from France, had already proven themselves in Chilean vineyards. Rothschild purchased vineyards in the Maipo Valley, a leading region in Chilean viticulture. The location is excellent. The proximity to the ocean provides coolness, while the Andes to the east act as a natural barrier.
