This delicious dessert wine from Banfi is a Moscadello di Montalcino. A very special glass of dessert wine, which Banfi calls Florus!
A top estate in Tuscany
Banfi is one of the top estates in the Tuscany region. The vineyards are situated between the Orcia and Ombrone rivers, south of the picturesque town of Montalcino. The vineyards are entirely planted with a single grape variety, including Sangiovese, Merlot, Pinot Nero, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Total production is 600,000 bottles per year, of which forty percent are sold in Italy. The remaining sixty percent are sold in eighty countries worldwide.
You might not immediately expect this sweet white wine from a region where mostly fine wines take their place. But after the meal, when dessert awaits, Brunello always serves a local sweet wine. The grapes are sweet because they are harvested late; the DOCG stipulates that harvesting is only permitted after October 10th. This presents a risk for winemakers, as it often rains in Montalcino from late September onwards, increasing the risk of rot. Due to the extra-long aging process, the sugar content of the grapes is considerably higher. The wine is made from 85 percent grapes from the current vintage, supplemented with 15 percent wine from the previous vintage. This portion has already been aged for a year in French oak barriques, giving it breadth and complexity. The result is a delicious sweet wine.
Powerful and sweet dessert wine from Banfi
This dessert wine has a broad and intense aroma. Aromas of pineapple, honey, and apricots. It has an open palate. Full and very powerfully sweet, yet very pleasantly fruity. Not overly acidic, but rather powerfully sweet. Juicy, fresh, and not too astringent with a hint of sweetness and a touch of acidity afterward. Enjoy this delicious wine with fruit desserts, Bavarian cream, but it also pairs perfectly with a robust blue cheese, such as Gorgonzola picante or Roquefort.
