One of the most special wines in our selection. In our opinion, the most unique wine from Piedmont, a beloved wine region. Piedmont boasts many beautiful wines, and this region boasts the most DOC and DOCG classifications in all of Italy! Who doesn't love Roero Arneis, Barbera d'Asti, or the much-loved Barolo? Barolo, in particular, has earned its international reputation. This white wine from Fontanafredda, Derthona, is sometimes affectionately called the white Barolo, thanks to its exclusive and regal character.

The Italian wines of Fontanafredda

Fontanafredda Derthona Colli Tortonensi Timorasso is created by one of Italy's most illustrious wineries. Fontanafredda has a long, but especially fascinating, history. It all began in 1858. The then-King of Sardinia, and later King of a unified Italy, purchased a vineyard in beautiful Piedmont. Not for himself, but for his mistress. The descendants of this mistress—and the king himself—still run the Fontanafredda winery today. Fontanafredda's location is ideal. Nestled in the most beautiful and unique villages, where experts consider the best Barolo wines to originate. Besides the magnificent clusters of Nebbiolo grapes, you'll also find impressive vineyards of Barbera, Dolcetto, and Arneis scattered throughout Piedmont. However, it remains the Barolo wine for which Fontanafredda is most famous. Today, this royal winery has chosen to produce a "white Barolo": Fontanafredda Derthona Colli Tortonensi Timorasso.

The white Barolo Fontanafredda Derthona Colli Tortonensi Timorasso

This Derthona from Fontanafredda is made from the Timorasso grape. An extremely rare grape, only 40 hectares are planted worldwide. More and more wine lovers are discovering this gem, so be quick: only a few bottles of Derthona are shipped from Piedmont to the Netherlands each year. The name Derthona comes from the ancient city of Tortona, where white Barolo originated, long before the phylloxera epidemic.

This "white Barolo" is a true feast for the senses. The unique character of the Timorasso grape is fully revealed upon opening the bottle. First, the fruit presents itself: white pear, soft peach, and a blossoming acacia. But the wine possesses considerable depth and complexity: green herbs, spring hawthorn, and ripped vanilla pods. All of this is enveloped in a sauce of blossom honey and citrus fruit. Fontanafredda Derthona Colli Tortonensi Timorasso is a true spectacle, a rare privilege to drink.
