The 2023 vintage in South Africa has been rated 90 points, indicating excellent quality. The wines are currently still youthful and have potential for further development.

Anyone who's ever been to South Africa is undoubtedly familiar with the wines of Goedverwacht. The winery is located about 150 kilometers from Cape Town in the Robertson Valley. Here, winemaker Jan du Toit crafts exquisite wines, inspired by the famous book "Great Expectations" by English author Charles Dickens. With immense love and dedication, he creates an even better version each year. And leave it to Jan du Toit, because he knows his vineyards like no other. The label also features cranes, whose movement symbolizes the constant search and striving for improvement and broadening horizons.

The old Chardonnay vineyard of Goedverwacht

The vineyards, filled with the Chardonnay grape for this white Great Expectations, are situated in a clay and limestone subsoil. Chardonnay grapes love this, and the plants thrive because of it. This is also due to the perfect climate, with abundant sunshine and a fresh breeze from the river. When the Chardonnay grapes are ripe, they are harvested at night and transported in small crates to Goedverwacht. Here, the bunches undergo a rigorous selection process and are destemmed. The juice is extracted using the "free-run juice" technique. This technique uses only the juice extracted by gravity from the bunches. No pressing is required, resulting in exceptionally high quality.

Wood aging for the Great Expectations Chardonnay

This unique and pure juice is even aged for several months in oak barrels. This gives it its beautiful light yellow color and a pleasantly thick texture. The aroma offers impressions of tropical fruit, vanilla, a touch of oak, and a touch of spice. On the palate, it has a lovely thick texture, revealing notes of apricots, peaches, and ripe mangoes. Later, as the wine swirls around the palate, it also reveals hints of green herbs and a hint of lychee.
