Varietal(s) Chardonnay

A truly special wine, made from Chardonnay and Auslese grapes (slightly sweet). Because Gruber Röschitz harvests the Chardonnay very late, the grapes develop a high sugar content, resulting in a wonderfully sweet finish!

The beginning of the Gruber Röschitz winery

The Gruber family is an Austrian winery from the Röschitz wine region. Wines have been produced here since 1814, but initially only for personal consumption. Ewald Gruber Sr. decided in the mid-20th century to convert the farm into a professional winery. His children have since taken over the business. The main grapes grown for this winery are Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Zweigelt. A total of ten different grape varieties are planted in seven different sub-regions. Röschitz is located in the western part of the Weinviertel (Weinviertel). This wine region extends north of Vienna and is the largest wine region in the country, with a cultivation area of 13,400 hectares. In the west, the climate is dry, rainfall is scarce, and the plantations climb the steep slopes of the Alps. The wind brings loose soil, creating a fertile but thin base where the vines can establish themselves. However, the roots must penetrate very deep into the underlying granite soil for water and vitality. Gruber's plantations are situated at relatively high altitudes and sheltered from the rain. This, combined with large temperature fluctuations, results in very tasty wines like this Chardonnay Aulese.

The seductive aroma of Chardonnay Aulese

We know the Chardonnay grape primarily as the grape responsible for exceptional dry white wines. It's grown worldwide, following in the footsteps of the great wines of Burgundy. The Austrian winery has chosen to make a sweet white wine from the Chardonnay grapes. This Chardonnay makes an excellent aperitif, pairs well with a Thai curry or a spicy Indian dish, and also with white-moulded cheeses. The aroma is seductive, wonderfully open, with notes of butter, citrus and honey, pears and apricots, lush and sweet. The flavor is powerful, with a hint of sweetness, citrus, and a touch of fat, easily digestible thanks to its distinct sweetness, while lovely acidity keeps it fresh. A slightly sweet white wine.
