With this Iselis, the House of Argiolas proves that Sardinian red wines can also be elegant and refined. The grapes grow in a small vineyard, Iselis, among olive trees, a saltwater lake, and a small, romantic country church, near Serdiana, in the hinterland of the Gulf of Cagliari in the south of the island.

Eighteen months of maturation for the Iselis Monica

A new project from the Argiolas family is Progetto Iselis. For this project, two wines are being produced at a specially selected location: a white and a red wine made from indigenous Sardinian grape varieties. The white wine is made from the ancient Nasco grape variety, and the red wine is made from the Monica grape variety. A poet friend of the family specially designed the labels for the bottles. The proceeds will be used to support humanitarian projects where aid is most needed. The red Iselis is made from the indigenous Monica grape variety, typical of the Cagliari region. This grape challenges the winemaker; it is a so-called raw gem. So this Monica di Sardegna becomes a discovery: complex, structured, and enriched by the addition of a very small amount of Carignano and Bovale sardo. After hand-harvesting, the grapes macerate for ten to twelve days at a controlled temperature of 28-30 degrees Celsius. Malolactic fermentation takes place in glazed concrete tanks for ten to fifteen days. Then begins the twelve-month aging in French barriques, followed by six months of bottle rest.

The delicious aftertaste of Argiolas Iselis Monica

The final result is certainly impressive. It gleams ruby red in the glass. The aroma is intense, highlighting fruity aromas of black cherries and plums, along with spicy hints of cinnamon and vanilla. The red wine is harmonious and velvety, with very soft tannins, fruity and delicately spiced, perfectly balanced by its characteristic acidity. The finish is very long and pleasant. Ideal with toast with tapenade and Parmesan, grilled lamb chops, or mature cheeses.
