The Iselis Nasco di Cagliari from Argiolas is a modern, dry wine made from a very ancient grape variety brought to Sardinia by Phoenician seafarers.

Wines from the Progetto Iselis project

This white wine is part of a new project by the Argiolas family, Progetto Iselis. For this project, two wines are being produced at a specially selected location: one white and one red, made from indigenous Sardinian grape varieties. The white wine is made from the ancient Nasco grape variety, which dates back to the time of the ancient Phoenician seafarers, while the red wine is made from the Monica grape variety. A poet friend of the family specially designed the labels for the bottles. The proceeds will be used to support humanitarian projects where aid is most needed. The grapes for this Sardinian white wine grow in a small vineyard, Iselis, nestled among olive trees, a saltwater lake, and a small, romantic country church near Serdiana, in the hinterland of the Gulf of Cagliari in the south of the island. The Nasco grape variety is usually vinified sweet, but Argiolas has opted for dry aging. For this, the harvest is advanced a month, and 85 percent Nasco and 15 percent Vermentino are vinified together. After the harvest, a very gentle pressing and natural decantation, the wine is aged for 60 days on the lees, with a small portion aged in French barriques.

A white wine of great class

The Iselis Nasco DOC shines straw yellow in the glass, and the nose develops aromas reminiscent of yellow flowers and yellow fruit, gorse, and melons. On the palate, this white wine is beautifully refined, generous, full-bodied, fresh, and rounded, carried by a creamy texture. Hints of marzipan and delicate bitter almonds linger on the long finish. A white wine of great class. Pairs well with ravioli with grated Parmesan, risotto with squid or artichoke, pasta with shrimp, or grilled swordfish.
