Pinotage is the national pride of South Africa. Developed at the University of Stellenbosch, it is a cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir. Since its discovery, it has been widely planted in the beautiful wine country of South Africa, and with great success. Especially in the Western Cape, the southwestern part of South Africa, you'll find numerous vineyards growing this impressive blue grape. Kleindal Winery, part of Robertson Winery, also boasts several vineyards full of Pinotage in its selection. These vineyards are located further inland but still thrive in South Africa's warmer climate, combined with the fresh breeze from the Indian Ocean.
The vineyards along the Breede River
Kleindal is located in the town of Robertson. This town, 160 kilometers east of Cape Town, was founded in 1853 by Reverend William Robertson. It became known for its ostrich and horse breeding. However, winemakers in this area also saw potential for wine. The Breede River, in particular, proved to be incredibly beneficial for the grapevines. This led to the establishment of Robertson Winery in 1941 and is now one of the largest wineries in South Africa. The Kleindal estate, with its characteristic indigenous grape varieties, showcases the richness of South African viticulture.
Impressions of Kleindal Pinotage
Kleindal Pinotage is South Africa at its finest. Perfection down to the last detail. A beautifully executed red wine based on the Pinotage grape. The exquisite aroma alone makes us slowly fall in love with this red wine. You smell fruity cassis, soft blackberry jam, and robust coffee. A touch of cocoa and a subtle spiciness make us fall in love with this Kleindal Pinotage. The palate is surprisingly robust for a South African red wine in this price range. This makes this Kleindal Pinotage an excellent accompaniment to grilled meats or a hearty barbecue.
