A unique piece of work, because when do you see a truly complete Chardonnay from Sicily? Well, this one from Donnafugata, called La Fuga Chardonnay, is unique and has a special character. As soon as you open the bottle, the vibrant bouquet greets you, with beautiful notes of banana, pineapple, and apple.
The history of Donnafugata La Fuga Chardonnay
This white wine is produced by the passionate Rallo family, who have been making wines on the island of Sicily since 1851. With their unique style, they have put Sicilian wine on the map worldwide. This fantastic winery represents the diversity and quality of Sicilian wines. It is currently run by the fifth generation of the family. Donnafugata literally means "woman on the run" and refers to Queen Maria Carolina. She was the wife of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and fled Naples in the early 19th century when Napoleon's troops invaded the city. She ended up in Sicily, where we find the vineyards of this winery today.
And this wine from Donnafugata also has a special label. Co-founder Gabriella Anca Rallo envisioned "escaping" and starting a new life, from the coast to the countryside. Gabriella is a woman with the wind in her hair and never rests. She invented La Fuga, a label that suggests not only movement but also sunshine and the countryside.
This Donnafugata La Fuga Chardonnay has been matured over the years
The grapes are hand-harvested at night in early August. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 15-16 degrees Celsius. Because this La Fuga Chardonnay is then aged for an impressive three months "sur lie" in the Donnafugata cellars, it has an intense flavor. A wonderfully creamy mouthfeel, vanilla, and plenty of tropical fruit on the palate. You can taste the sun in this La Fuga Chardonnay. Full and rich!
