Heavy clay soils rich in limestone ensure this Chardonnay's richness and complexity. This is also where the name for this wine comes from; Limestone means limestone. It's a beautiful, complex, unoaked Chardonnay from South Africa that will continue to surprise you! The name De Wetshof has been synonymous with the production of fine wines in South Africa since the 1970s. As the first registered wine estate in the Robertson Wine Valley, De Wetshof has become internationally renowned as the leading Chardonnay house in South Africa. They played a pioneering role in introducing this noble Burgundian grape to the country. With its crisp white buildings, rose bushes, and jacaranda trees, the estate has become a well-known landmark in the Robertson Wine Valley. The cellar facade is modeled on the famous and historic First Customs House in Cape Town. The finest grapes are selected for all wines, and quality is always paramount.

The harvest of the Chardonnay for this De Wetshof Limestone Hill

The grape originates from the Robertson Valley, about 150 kilometers from Cape Town. Robertson lies along the Breede River, and the river valley's shape creates a distinct funnel-like effect. This allows a cool breeze from the sea to flow over the vineyards. A constant southeasterly breeze from the Indian Ocean keeps the vineyards cool, especially at night. Automated irrigation systems ensure that the vines receive the right amount of water at precisely the right time. This ensures optimal ripening of the grapes and their full flavor.

What does the De Wetshof Limestone Hill Chardonnay taste like?

The wine isn't oak-aged. Therefore, it lacks the typical Chardonnay flavor, but it does offer a refreshing taste. On the nose, this Limestone Hill Chardonnay has hints of grapefruit with plenty of tropical fruit, as well as notes of nuts and butter. The refined palate is delightful, beautifully mild, and a good, thick structure completes the picture. On the palate, aromas of citrus fruit, minerals, peach, and pineapple are present, along with roasted nuts and lime zest. The finish is smooth with a refreshing note.
