Vintage Report

2023 was a warm vintage in Burgundy, resulting in ripe grapes with good concentration. Despite the warmth, many producers managed to craft wines that retained freshness and balance.

Louis Latour Montagny 1er Cru La Grande Roche 2023 Côte Chalonnaise, Burgundy

Louis Latour Montagny 1er Cru La Grande Roche 2023 is a white Burgundy made from Chardonnay from Montagny, in the south of the Côte Chalonnaise. The vineyard is located high on the slopes and catches a lot of sun, allowing the grapes to develop extra flavour concentration. At the same time, the style remains clear and fresh, as Louis Latour opts for fermentation and maturation in stainless steel. This results in a full, generous Montagny Premier Cru with white peach, fresh hazelnut, honeysuckle, and a persistent mineral finish.

Vineyards and region

Montagny is located approximately 30 km south of Beaune, in the rolling hills of the southern part of the Côte Chalonnaise.

Location / Origin: La Grande Roche is situated high on the slopes of Montagny. This high altitude and good sun exposure help the Chardonnay grapes achieve ripeness, concentration, and a full fruit expression.

Appellation: What does Premier Cru mean? In Burgundy, Premier Cru refers to vineyards with a recognised higher quality within the appellation. Montagny Premier Cru is exclusively dedicated to white wine made from Chardonnay.

Soil: The soil consists of limestone, chalk, and clay. This combination gives Chardonnay both freshness and tension, as well as sufficient roundness in its structure.

Vineyard & Harvest: The vines are on average 35 years old, and the yield is around 40 hl per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, which helps to carefully select the fruit.

Grape composition

This Montagny Premier Cru is made entirely from Chardonnay.

Chardonnay – Montagny Premier Cru: Chardonnay forms the complete base here, giving the wine its white peach, floral aromas, almond notes, and full mouthfeel. In Montagny, the grape retains a lot of freshness, while the high altitude and chalky soil provide a refined, mineral tension.

Vinification and ageing

The vinification focuses on purity, freshness, and a clear expression of Chardonnay.

Fermentation: The wine undergoes traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and full malolactic conversion. Stainless steel keeps the fruit taut and pure, while malolactic conversion softens the acidity and gives the wine more roundness.

Ageing: The wine ages for 8–10 months in stainless steel tanks. This ensures that the floral notes, fresh fruit, and mineral finish remain clear, without any influence from wood.

Ageing potential: This Montagny Premier Cru has an ageing potential of 3 years. This suits its fresh, fruit-driven style, with enough structure to develop further for a short period.

Tasting notes and serving suggestions

In the glass, this Montagny Premier Cru has a brilliant pale yellow colour. The nose opens with fresh hazelnut and honeysuckle, followed by a full, generous taste with almond paste and white peach. The finish is fresh, mineral, and persistent.

Serving temperature: Serve this Montagny Premier Cru at 12–14 °C, so that the full structure, white peach, and fresh mineral finish come together beautifully.

Dishes: Excellent with asparagus, rabbit galantine, trout with almonds, shellfish, and sheep cheese.

Awards

94/100, James Suckling (2023): Praised for its mineral aromas of flint, grapefruit, lemon, wet river stone, and white flowers, with vibrant acidity, texture, and a slight phenolic grip.

89/100, Decanter (2023): Highlights ripe peach, mirabelle plum, and melon, with a rich texture and a pure fruit style due to stainless steel fermentation.

Good energy, Burghound.com (2023): Appreciates the nutty aroma, citrus, apple, spicy pear, and the fresh, slightly stony finish with good length.

4.0 stars, Vivino: A strong user score for this white Burgundy from Montagny Premier Cru.

More information about Maison Louis Latour

Maison Louis Latour was founded in 1797 and is one of Burgundy's historic family houses. The house operates in the Côte d’Or, Côte Chalonnaise, Ardèche, and Provence, but remains strongly connected to classic Burgundian grapes like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For this Montagny Premier Cru, Louis Latour consciously chooses stainless steel, so that the chalky origin, the fresh fruit expression, and the mineral tension of La Grande Roche clearly emerge.
