The 2013 Opus One is an exceptional wine that embodies the essence of Napa Valley's terroir and the craftsmanship of its producers. This vintage is praised for its complexity, elegance, and impressive aging potential.
About the Domain
Opus One is the result of a unique collaboration between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and American winemaker Robert Mondavi. Founded in 1978, the estate strives to create wines that combine Old World finesse with New World expressiveness. Located in the heart of Napa Valley, Opus One is synonymous with uncompromising quality and innovation.
Vineyard and Terroir
Opus One's vineyards span four parcels in the western part of the renowned Oakville AVA, including parts of the legendary To Kalon Vineyard. Five traditional Bordeaux grape varieties are carefully cultivated here: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. The unique terroir, with its diverse soils and microclimates, contributes to the complexity and depth of the wines.
Vinification
The 2013 harvest began on September 5th and concluded on October 8th. The grapes were hand-harvested in the cool of the night to preserve freshness. After careful selection, the grapes underwent fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine then aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels, followed by an additional 15 months of bottle aging before release.
Tasting notes
The 2013 Opus One presents a deep ruby red color. On the nose, the wine reveals opulent aromas of blueberries, cassis, and blackcurrants, with subtle hints of rose, anise, and spice. The palate is characterized by a creamy attack, followed by layers of complexity with velvety tannins enveloping a core of concentrated black fruit. The elegant acidity and core structure deliver a lingering finish with nuances of dark chocolate. This vintage promises to offer decades of enjoyment.
Serving Temperature and Gastronomic Combinations
Serve this wine at a temperature of 16-18°C to reveal its full aromatic potential. The 2013 Opus One is an ideal accompaniment to rich meat dishes such as grilled lamb chops, sirloin steak with a red wine sauce, or game dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses and truffle dishes, where the wine's complexity complements the flavors of the dish.
